Law Office Externship Placement and Seminar

This externship experience is comprised of an externship placement with a mentor attorney at a law office and a co-requisite seminar.

Law Office Externship Placement and Seminar

The Law Office Externship Placement is a course taken in conjunction with the Law Office Externship Seminar. In the Placement, student externs work under the supervision of a mentor attorney at a law office. Students earn two credits (pass/fail) for working a minimum of 140 hours (10–12 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters) and completing related assignments at the School. All placements must be approved in advance of the semester by the Director. Student externs also take part in an accompanying one-credit, pass/fail seminar.

The seminar supplements students’ Placement working under the supervision of a mentor attorney. In the seminar, students will learn about the practice of law through self-reflection, self-evaluation, and discussion. The course will focus on how students can make the most out of their placements, manage their assignments, learn to navigate the dynamics of workplaces, develop professionalism and cultural competency skills, build relationships, and utilize this experience to benefit their long-term career goals. This one-credit, pass-fail seminar will meet on selected Wednesdays throughout the semester, plus required one-on-one meetings between each student and their professor.
